THE BACK GARDENS

Raised Bed Vegetable Garden

The vegetable gardens have evolved over a number of years to their present state of wooden bordered raised beds. They are relatively easily maintained and each is complete with a system of brackets to hold poles or hoops. The largest portion of what we grow is grown to be used fresh, although we do have freezing, canning, and drying equipment to take care of the extras.

We specialize in trying out unusually colored and heirloom varieties. Tomatoes and beans are usual guests along with the asparagus bed at the eastern end of the garden. In 2000 we experimented with red plastic under the tomatoes and green (looks black in the foreground) plastic under melons.

Garden and Greenhouse Veggie Garden Looking East

Altogether, there are nine raised beds, each measuring four feet by eight feet. We work hard to keep them as busy as possible through the season since an idle bed is the weed's workshop.

We've been struggling with a small greenhouse that Randy made of pvc and covered with plastic. It's difficult to regulate the temperature and replacing the plastic is a strain on personal relations between us. The entertaining process is probably a delight to the neighbors, however. Some day we hope to replace it with the real thing.

Strawberries

The strawberry beds are a special delight and provide us with plenty to eat and freeze. The chicken wire sides and mesh covering are our best effort to keep the most of them for ourselves. Our yard usually supports a steady rabbit population that takes up residence under the shed with an occassional litter hidden away under the zucchini.
