THE FRONT GARDENS

In 1998 we finally dug up all that horrible grass in the front yard, constructed a stone-edged path through raised beds and began planting herbs and native plants.
The Front Patio
Enter the garden through a small patio area. The area, framed by timbers and filled with loose stone provides a gathering spot under an open roof. The small flag is changed with the season and the potted papyrus plant spends its winters inside and summers out, along with the two goldfish that swim around among the roots. A trumpet vine climbs the trellis and provides bees and hummingbirds with colorful nectar-filled flowers. A large cut sandstone slab hauled from the Furnace Hills to the north provides a stand for a window box, and rocks from our travels decorate the corners.

Black Pansies Black Pansies

One of the favorite flowers we have, the black pansies also make a great syrup for enjoying on ice cream. Their unusual color, or lack thereof, provides an interesting addition to the garden. An annual, they have successfully re-seeded themselves from time to time. These, at the patio entrance off the driveway frame the greeting "As a Garden Grows, So Grows the Gardener."

White Violets
In stark contrast, our signature White Violets, were here before we were. They are still our favorites and we're equally excited each year to see them appear where ever they like.
